The Hanham District Green Belt Conservation Society (HDGCS) is deeply concerned about South Gloucestershire Council's (SGC) draft New Local Plan, which proposes to allow the construction of 270 houses on Green Belt land in Hanham. This plan is not only in direct opposition to SGC's own declared Climate Emergency but also a threat to the biodiversity and natural beauty of our community.
A Climate Emergency Ignored
In July 2019, SGC declared a Climate Emergency, committing to making South Gloucestershire carbon neutral by 2030. This ambitious goal is contingent on protecting our Green Belt, which acts as a vital carbon sink, absorbing greenhouse gases and mitigating climate change. By allowing the destruction of Green Belt land, SGC's draft plan undermines its own commitment to tackling climate change.
A Threat to Biodiversity
The Green Belt is not just a scenic backdrop; it is a vital ecosystem teeming with life. Hanham's Green Belt is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including ancient woodlands, diverse bird populations, and numerous species of insects, reptiles, and mammals. Paving over this precious habitat would have devastating consequences for biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems and endangering the survival of many species.
A Community Under Threat
The proposed development would not only harm the environment but also disrupt the character and tranquility of Hanham. The Green Belt provides a much-needed buffer between urban development and the surrounding countryside, offering residents a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sacrificing this green space for new housing would erode the quality of life for many Hanham residents.
A Call to Stand Up for Our Green Belt
The HDGCS urges SGC to reconsider its draft plan and protect our Green Belt from further development. We call upon all residents of Hanham and the wider South Gloucestershire area to join us in this fight. By speaking out against this unsustainable development proposal, we can ensure that our community's environment and quality of life are not sacrificed for short-sighted gains.
Together, we can protect our Green Belt, safeguard our environment, and build a sustainable future for Hanham and all of South Gloucestershire.
