When outline planning application P23/01330/O for development at The Batch in Hanham was refused on 16th August 2024, many of us breathed a sigh of relief. However, this is far from the end of the story. There are three crucial developments still unfolding that could impact the future of Hanham’s Green Belt.
1. The Appeal Process
Although the application was refused, the developers have until 16th February 2025 to appeal the decision. Appeals can sometimes overturn local planning decisions, so this is a key period in which the Society will remain vigilant and prepared to act.
2. South Gloucestershire Council’s Draft Local Plan
South Gloucestershire Council is in the process of developing its draft local plan, which will outline where housing developments are permitted from 2025 to 2040. Alarmingly, both The Batch and land at Castle Inn Farm remain included as potential sites within the draft plan. The next stage of this process, known as Regulation 19, is expected to commence in the New Year, and there will be another public consultation. This will be a critical opportunity for residents to have their say and influence the future of our local area.
3. Changes to National Policy
The Government is due to release a revised version of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in the coming weeks. Early indications suggest this new framework could reduce protections for Green Belt land, making it easier for developers to push through applications.
